What is the ISSCT ?
The ISSCT is an international body of sugarcane technologists (sugarcane scientists, engineers and chemists) whose main objective is to enable free and purposeful exchange of new ideas and technical information on sugarcane technology and agriculture and to raise technical standards in the industry. It is now in its 75th year and has members from 68 countries.

How is the ISSCT governed ?
The ISSCT is headed by a Council consisting of the Executive, the Councillors, the officers responsible for the Congress, and the Permanent Secretary (ex-officio). The Permanent Secretary Dr. Claude Ricaud has his offices at the ISSCT Permanent Secretariat in Mauritius. Presently, Mr. D.M. Sawhney, CMD Triveni Engg. & Industries Ltd., is the Chairman of the Executive Committee of ISSCT. He is the first Indian to be elected to this post.

What is the ISSCT Congress ?
It is the world's largest single gathering of sugarcane experts, taking place every three years in different sugarcane producing countries. The XXIII Congress will be held at New Delhi, INDIA from 22-26 February 1999.

What are the significant features of the XXIII ISSCT Congress ?

  1. The Congress venue is the state-of-the-art Vigyan Bhavan Convention Centre in New Delhi
  2. 1500 delegates are expected
  3. 120 research papers and 135 posters would be presented during the Congress in 4 areas of specialisation : Agriculture, Biology, Factory & Co-products
  4. The Indian Organising Committee has offered many "firsts" for this Congress :


  5. Pre-Congress Tours have been arranged to sugar industry locations (factories and research institutes) to observe developments at first hand
  6. The ISSCT Trade Fair "EXPO SUGATEK '99" would be held concurrently with the Congress
  7. The Post-Congress tour will take delegates to Pakistan
How does India rank as a sugar-producing nation ?
India is the world's largest producer of cane sugar (with a record cane crystal sugar production of 16.45 million tonnes in 1995-96) and also has the largest number of sugar factories (450), which are in various stages of modernisation.

What is the significance of the Congress for India ?
Holding the ISSCT Congress in India will have a significant influence on the performance of the Indian sugar industry. The adoption of new technologies would appreciably improve the productivity, quality and export competitiveness of sugar so as to earn foreign exchange after meeting the domestic requirement. The Government of India (Food Ministry) is extending all possible help for the successful and smooth organisation of this Congress.

How can I attend the ISSCT Congress ?
1. Participation in the ISSCT Congress requires you to first become an ISSCT Individual Member for which the Subscription Fee is US$60 if paid before 1/11/98 and US$70 thereafter. This fee may be paid in equivalent Indian Rupees. The Membership is valid from the end of one Congress until the end of the next. Use our Membership Form on this site.

2. Different participation packages are available to delegates to suit different interests and budgets. All delegates are entitled to the Welcome Cocktail, Indian Cultural Programme with Dinner, lunches, coffee breaks, pre-prints of all Technical Sessions, and Farewell Gala Dinner.
